La Junta Canyon
La Junta Canyon is a series of 30 stream-side campgrounds that stretch for about 4 miles along Forest Road 76 from New Mexico State Road 518 to Upper La Junta Campground. The canyon has a dispersed camping feel, but with restrooms and dumpsters nearby and one pressurized water source. The canyon is open to ATV use and there are several good ATV trails nearby.
$6 per vehicle, day use or overnight
Reservations: First-come, first-served.
Directions: From Taos, N.M., drive 22 miles south on NM State Road 518. Turn left on gravel Forest Road 76. The first camp site, dumpster and restroom is within the first half-mile. The sites are spaced along the road for the next 4 miles. See map below.
Amenities: Vault toilets, pressurized drinking water, garbage service.
Open dates: Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Nearby: ATV riding is available and there are several trails nearby. The small creek, Rito la Presa, is stocked with trout.
