Hopewell Lake

    Hopewell Lake is on US Highway 64 between Tres Piedras and Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico. The small, man-made lake is at 9,500 feet elevation and nestled in thick pines. The lake is regualarly stocked with rainbow trout and offers good fishing for the whole family. No ATVs are allowed in the campground, but there are miles of ATV accessible roads and trails nearby.

    $16 per night, $5 per extra vehicle
    $5 per day in the day use area.
    $35 annual pass for the day use area.
    $41 for the day-use group site, plus $1 per person after 50.

Reservations: Several sites can be reserved individually, and one group of sites can be reserved together for groups of up to 40 people. There is also a group shelter available very close to the lake, available for day use only. All of the reservable sites can be reserved at

Directions: The campground is about 15 miles west of Tres Piedras and 25 miles east of Tierra Amarilla on US 64. From Taos, N.M., take US 64 about 40 miles west. The campground is on the south side of the road, left if you're coming from Tres Piedras and Taos.  See map below.

Amenities: Vault toilets. Pressurized drinking water. Several dumpsters are available in the canyon.

Open dates: Memorial Day-Labor Day.

Nearby: ATVs are allowed in the area, but they must be trailered in the campground. There is a maximum $400 fine for riding ATVs within the campground. There is a horse corral at the campground and several trails that are popular for horseback riding. Hopewell Lake, a small, well-stocked trout lake, is the main attraction.
